We are really excited to be joining the Mayor of London delegation at the 2016 Smart City Expo in Barcelona this week. Here at Mastodon C we are building a new city modelling and data sharing platform, called Witan, working closely with the Greater London Authority and London boroughs. We are based in east London, so it’s great to be building technology that will have a direct impact on how our home city is run today and how our city will develop in future.

Witan will provide state-of-the-art models, powerful data sharing functionality and well-curated data sets, via a web interface, and built on a big-data ready open source platform. It will break down the barriers between modellers and decision-makers from the numerous organisations involved in making a modern city flourish, enabling vastly improved collaborative work to understand what is happening today and to explore ‘what if’ scenarios for the future.

Witan is already used by the GLA and the 33 London boroughs to generate detailed population projections linked to planned housing development, providing the data to estimate numbers of school attendees. We’re now extending the platform to take in other elements of public service demand modelling, for example for traffic management, specialist education provision and to target fire prevention. We are backed by Innovate UK, the UK Government’s innovation agency, which allows us breathing space to explore new modelling applications with partner organisations.

But our ambitions aren’t limited to London or the UK. We believe the confluence of population growth, increasing urbanisation, and powerful new sensing and computing capabilities is a massive opportunity for data science to make a real difference to everyone’s lives, and that is what really drives us. So if you’ve got a city planning problem, do get in touch as we’d love to explore how we can help. We’ll be at the Mayor of London’s stand in Barcelona, and it would be great to see you there, or drop us a line at [email protected].
